About the course

Bud Kelley Park DGC, or "The Bud" is an 18-hole design with 2 concrete tee pads and 2 permanent baskets per hole. This creates 72 holes in the space of 18 holes through 4 separate layout combinations. The design utilizes previously unused portions of Bud Kelley Park to create an 18-hole, championship-level course. The creation of 2 unique tee areas, or “lines” to the baskets, as well as 2 unique green areas was prioritized in the design. The course loops around the main body of the property with holes 1-5 playing out to the lake, 6-10 playing back towards the parking lot, a smaller 6-hole loop (holes 11-16, on the western part of the property), and finally 17-18 playing back to parking lot. Course par is 62 for all 18-hole layouts: par 4s are holes 2, 4, 9 and 16, and par 5s are holes 5 and 13. Only 3 holes play in the central meadows, with the rest wooded. Wide fairways and landing zones create a forgiving learning space from the short tees but also challenge advanced players from the long tees. The course does not play over or close to any existing paved walking paths or near any property lines. No holes require throws directly over any creeks or lakes. The course design creates a balance of lefty, righty, and straight throws. The property character is beautiful Georgia Piedmont, with rolling meadows and mature hardwoods in the old homestead area close to the lake, pine stands around the wetland area, and a creek/natural springs feeding into the wetland and eventually to the larger lake. There are farming relics still in the woods near the hole 6 tee, and a cattle loading ramp and other relics that remain by the green of hole 7 as a reminder that this area was once a homestead from a previous generation.

History

Bud Kelley Disc Golf Course (DGC) was designed by Planet Earth Designs and course designers Ryan Harris and Austin Lytle. The course was developed by J.R. Bowman Construction of McDonough, Georgia. The project idea was initiated through a partnership between Henry County Parks and Recreation and the Henry County Disc Golf Club under the leadership of Mike Haney. Bud Kelley Park was named in memory of Edwin Bud Kelley, a lifelong resident of Henry County whose family was instrumental in establishing the Kelleytown Community in McDonough. Mr. Kelley served as a Henry County Commissioner from 1969 to 1976 and was nicknamed the "Mayor of Kelleytown." Mr. Kelley thrived on serving people and never wavered in his desire to help others, making great strides for the betterment of Henry County. He was influential in the idea to establish Henry Medical Center in Stockbridge. The Grand Opening/Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for Bud Kelley Park DGC was held on December 19, 2025 at 9:00 AM with the course opening for play immediately afterwards.

Although this course is located in a public county park, it does not feel at all like a park course. There is a tremendous variety of shots and the separate layouts create something for everyone. The property is quiet and beautiful. There is a course is very easy to navigate with ample signage after each basket.
